The Most Overlooked Thing in Cellular Accessories

If you have mobile handset, you begin to think about accessories rather quickly. Sometimes it’s just outright astonishing what they’ve invented to go with a wireless phone! Things in the Didn’t Know You Needed It Department. As in, for example, unlocking cell phones.

Which is to say, cell phones which are unlocked. Now it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when discussing something called “cellular accessories,” but then again, that’s the purpose of an article like this, to be informative! And chances are you didn’t know about unlocking your cell phone, did you – what it means and how to do it. Well, that’s just what this article is about, in case you never bothered to read up on cell phones before you bought one!

After all, you don’t need to know how a TV works just to use one, but when it comes to cell phones, knowing a little something about the devices’ technological bases can help when it comes to choosing the best phone, or best carrier and service plan, for yourself. Now there are many kinds of cellular technology out there, with different protocols and whatnot, and one of them is GSM. It’s not as common in the United States as CDMA, but around the world most countries use GSM primarily, if not exclusively. From your perspective as a user, it doesn’t much matter in terms of your call itself, with issues like clarity and coverage being about the same, all else being equal. However, if you decide one day to switch carriers – and who doesn’t, eventually? – it can make a big difference in terms of your convenience, unless you don’t mind throwing away your

phone (which you really should recycle instead!).

You see, each cell phone contains a unique serial number that is used by the service provider to identify your account. The wireless provider knows that a certain phone is your phone through this number, routing calls to your handset when someone rings you up. GSM cell phones are not directly linked to their users. They each have instead a removable Subscriber Information Module card, or SIM card, which contains the serial number. Now the convenient thing about GSM cell phones is that you can put any SIM card into any GSM phone, and any GSM phone will work with any SIM card. Unfortunately, some wireless carriers “lock” their phones so that they can’t work with SIM cards from all other companies. Unlocking your phone means to reverse that programming so that it can work with any SIM card, from any company. And isn’t that quite the must-have accessory?
